The Kaftan: a brief history on the favourite Hari Raya staple.

A “kaftan” or “caftan” is a front-buttoned coat or overdress, usually reaching to the ankles, with long sleeves made from materials such as wool, cashmere, silk, or cotton (Wikipedia.org). Kaftan’s are often the fashionable go-to piece for many celebrations such as Raya and wedding celebrations. This versatile item has endured the ages, since it first came out in 14th century Persia and other Mediterranean countries. The Kaftan’s relaxed style, which may be worn with a sash or belt, is a flattering option for different body types, whether you’re curvy or petite. (Good for hiding those unsightly bulges after eating one-two many ketupat, rendang or those yummy Raya cookies!) For a modern twist on your outfit: pair a kaftan with leggings, tailored pants or skinny jeans. See some beautiful embellished kaftan’s here.
